Adult Education Changing Lives in Rural Uganda
Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) programs are often overlooked, but not at DECODI. We understand that when a mother learns to read, write, and calculate, the whole family benefits. Our FAL classes help women gain the literacy skills they never had the opportunity to learn as children.
They start small—learning the alphabet, writing their names, and counting money. But within months, many are reading the Bible, keeping financial records for their small businesses, and helping their children with schoolwork. Literacy becomes a key that unlocks empowerment.
Beyond academics, these classes promote positive mindset change. Women begin to dream, plan, and make informed decisions. They report improved hygiene, nutrition, and family health outcomes. Education, even in adulthood, transforms not just individuals, but entire communities.
Now I can read my Bible and count money at the market. I feel proud and confident.” — Beatrice, Serere District
