How Livestock Rearing Is Feeding Families and Futures

One of the most impactful programs at DECODI has been livestock rearing. Starting with goat distribution in 2007, this initiative has grown to include poultry, pigs, and other small livestock. It’s simple: give a woman a goat, and she’ll feed her family. Teach her how to raise it, and she’ll build a future.

Women are trained in basic animal care, feeding, housing, and disease prevention. As their livestock multiply, so do their opportunities. They sell animals to pay for school fees, medical bills, and invest in better housing.

Livestock rearing also brings social benefits. Women often form small cooperatives where they exchange skills, support each other, and even pool resources to invest in larger ventures. These animals become more than assets—they become symbols of hope and self-reliance.

I started with one goat. Now I have five, and my children are back in school
