SPIRITUAL EMPOWERMENT
LIVELIHOODS
Adoption of smart Agri-business
The adoption of smart Agri-business practices aligns with Uganda’s National Development Plan, which aims to promote inclusive economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve food security. We believe that commercial success in agriculture is the most effective and inclusive pathway to sustainable development. Rural areas have also experienced an increase in deforestation levels due to the energy and food crises, especially in areas where there is a reliance on wood for energy. To counter these issues, women farmers must adopt Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices.
Business Development
We recognize that healthy trade and business activities are core components and fundamental triggers for economic growth that create jobs, reduce poverty, and provide a solid foundation to substantially improve economic outcomes for marginalized population segments, especially women. More significantly, women participating in Farmer’s Associations can tap into several economic/financial advantages that are typically unavailable to individual farmers. These include Increased aggregate purchasing power for all participating members and access to low-interest micro-credits with zero collateral requirements. DECODI is therefore building the capacity of single mothers and their households, within an ambitious, multi-disciplinary SACCO framework, to transition to sustainable farming practices, leverage financial literacy/Agro-Finance, and effectively manage the business dynamics of agriculture.
EDUCATION
Our education theme focuses on improving access to quality secondary education for the children of the single mothers we work with and improving the literacy levels of our beneficiaries through Functional Adult Education. An integral part of our commitment to supporting single mothers is the obligation to place children’s welfare and education at the center of what we do. Our student scholarship program is designed to provide sustainable solutions for families living in extreme poverty, delivering long-term development interventions that promote the rights of children to survival, protection, development, and participation.
Secondly under Education, we also provide Functional Adult Literacy and Community Mindset Change programs which are essential to the development and progress of any society. These programs aim to improve the literacy skills of adults, as well as to instil positive attitudes and values that promote community development and growth. We consider women’s literacy to be an essential part of women’s empowerment, not only for communication purposes but also for acquiring and transmitting knowledge. These classes have proven to be a powerful tool against poverty and ignorance, with many mothers reporting that they have been able to use their newfound knowledge to process information, solve problems, and address the root causes of maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Improved health and education outcomes have also been reported, including better nutrition, hygiene, and financial autonomy.
